Semiconductor nuclear radiation detector studies
Abstract
In response to a problem that arose with regard to the availability of germanium for lithium-drifted germanium detectors (Ge(Li) detectors), a comprehensive program was undertaken aimed toward the development of a method for the rapid specification of germanium quality for nuclear radiation detector use, and the determination of factors affecting germanium quality. Measurements on a large number of germanium crystals, and intercomparison of these measurements and the methods employed, led to developments in the measurement of lithium mobility and driftability, carrier trapping, and semiconductor defect and impurity determination via and improved infrared response (IRR) technique.
