Holographic and direct optical data storage at Sandia Laboratories
Abstract
Holographic and direct optical storage subsystems are investigated. Fiber optics ribbons were proposed to direct light to and from linear ferroelectric page composers. Results are presented. One-dimensional holographic recording is demonstrated to be an attractive alternative to conventional two-dimensional holography and is compatible with the use of fiber optics light guides in high data rate systems. It is feasible to record data directly by modulating light emitting diode (LED) arrays. Optical fiber coupling between the individual LED's and the recording material is advantageous. Using LED arrays and film sensitivities commercially available, it is feasible to attain line widths between 3 and 20 microns, or wider, and bandwidths up to 250 kHz/channel.
