On the instability of the turbulent jet boundary layer
Abstract
A stability calculation is presented for velocity profiles which were measured in turbulent circular jets. The coherent structure of jet turbulence can be explained by means of unstable axisymmetric and azimuthal disturbances. It is found theoretically that beyond a Mach number of 0.8 the first azimuthal disturbance is always more amplified than the axisymmetric one. This suggests a significant influence of the Mach number on the coherent structure of jet turbulence.
