Superconductive niobium layers
Abstract
Niobium cavities with high quality factor and high microwave critical magnetic flux densities were prepared. Various starting materials, manufacturing methods, and surface preparation techniques were investigated. Highest quality factor values were obtained in TE011 modes and also in TM010 modes with X-band cavities machined from solid niobium and finished by a special electropolishing process and by repeated anodizing. The cavities exhibit no degradation even on exposure to atmospheric air or irradiation with accelerated protons.
