Experimental determination of hydrodynamic mass effects
Abstract
An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the hydrodynamic mass effects of various simple geometric shapes with emphasis being placed upon right circular cylinders. By oscillating models in simple harmonic motion, the excess force required to produce this motion in water was measured for comparison with the force necessary to produce the same motion in air, yielding information that is necessary to determine hydrodynamic mass coefficients. A dependence of the hydrodynamic mass coefficients upon frequency and amplitude of oscillation was investigated along with the effects of the proximity of a free surface. (Modified author abstract)
