Electron-ion equilibration in a partially degenerate plasma
Abstract
Expressions are derived for the energy loss rate of a fast ion to electrons as it slows down in a plasma of arbitrary electron degeneracy and for the equilibration of the ions and electrons in the plasma. The calculation proceeds on a kinematic basis which is less formidable and more transparent than the corresponding 'dielectric constant' treatment would be. Previously known expressions (or algebraic variations thereto) are quoted for the kinematics of particle collisions and the distribution functions to establish the notation and to formulate the problem. New results are derived for arbitrary electron degeneracy, on the energy loss of a fast ion to the plasma electrons, and on electron-ion equilibration.
