The optical sensors of the Netherlands astronomical satellite (ANS). I. The sun sensors.
Abstract
Three types of sun sensors are used in the maneuvers which are to ensure that the orientation of the satellite toward the sun will be exactly as required for the solar-panel power system and the astronomical studies to be conducted. The three sensor types include coarse, intermediate, and fine sun sensors. Design and operational characteristics of each sensor type are discussed. The onboard computer processes the data from the fine sensors, which control the attitude of the satellite with limit cycles restricted to a few minutes of arc.
