Modulation of acoustic wave by turbulent shear flow
Abstract
The collimated Monochromatic and coherent acoustic wave, (a sine wave of 3 KHz-90 KHz), was directed perpendicularly across a two-dimensional turbulent jet. Extensive study of the statistical properties of both the turbulent flow and of the received wave (amplitude and phase modulation) offers physical insight into the general phenomenon of a periodic pressure field scattered by a random solenoidal velocity field. In addition, there is strong indication that the acoustic wave may be used as a diagnostic tool for measuring some statistical properties of the turbulence velocity field.
