Classification of sonic velocity profiles according to acoustic criteria
Abstract
The significance of the characteristics of sonic velocity fields in the sea is evaluated on the basis of the effect on the sound intensity field and the related effect on the acoustic orientation range. The relation between sonic velocity profiles and sound intensity fields is simulated with the aid of an idealized numerical sound propagation model. Model calculations involving a systematic variation of the sonic velocity profiles are conducted to determine the acoustically most efficient profile characteristics.
