Planetary magnetism
Abstract
This monograph discusses various aspects of geophysical and space-probe investigations into the origin and nature of planetary magnetic fields. Topics considered include the field at the earth's surface, the temporal behavior of the geomagnetic field, terrestrial paleomagnetism, lunar magnetism, the interplanetary magnetic field, the solar-wind flux near the planets, the magnetic field in the vicinity of Venus, and the magnetic fields of Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury. The dynamo theory of planetary magnetism is reviewed in detail, and some possible correlations between planetary precession and dynamo motion are examined.
