Detection of a Strong and Possibly Variable Compact Millimeter Wave Component in Centaurus a
Abstract
A surprisingly strong radio source which is probably variable on very short time scales has been observed at millimeter wavelengths near the nucleus of the radio galaxy Centaurns A (NGC 5128). This apparently opaque and compact component emits only a few percent of the total radiated power, but suggests the presence of a large source of energy at the galactic nucleus.
