Some morphological properties of WN spectra.
Abstract
An extension of the Hiltner-Schild line-width classification for WN spectra is introduced, in order to describe more fully the range of line widths among these stars. A simplified excitation classification, based solely upon the relative strengths of N III, IV, and V emission features in the classification region, is used. The mutual independence of excitation, emission-line width, and emission-line strength in WN spectra is emphasized, with reference to an illustration of wide, 62 A mm -1 spectrograms of six southern WN stars. Particular attention is called to the comparison between HD 86161 and 96348, which have nearly identical excitation and line strengths but systematically different line widths.
