Spectroscopic observations of NGC 4676.
Abstract
New spectroscopic observations of the peculiar double galaxy NGC 4676 are presented. These observations reverse the sense of the velocity difference between the two galaxies previously determined by Burbidge and Burbidge and thus remove a major objection to the tidal model for this system proposed by Toomre and Toorure. A-type stars dominate the light from all parts of the northern component, including the entire length of the long, narrow tail, as well as the light from at least one part of the southern component. The observations are consistent with a rapid, brief period of star formation during the tidal encounter. Subject headings: galaxies - redshifts - star formation
