The Support of Prominences Formed in Neutral Sheets
Abstract
Summary. It is shown that prominence filaments formed in a magnetically neutral sheet in the corona can be supported against gravity by magnetic forces due to induced currents in the photospheric boundary. The supporting force is inversely proportional to the height above the photo sphere and the filaments seem stable against small perturbations. The adopted magnetic field configuration allows for a prominence eruption. However, it is suggested that the so called disparition brusque may only occur if either the prominence loses weight by mass loss or through the influence of large scale changes in the photospheric magnetic field.
