Analysis of discrete radar meters, equivalent to first-order tracking systems
Abstract
Comparison of an optimal procedure for processing single radar measurements with the simpler recurrence processing procedure. An optimal procedure for processing such measurements is synthesized in the context of a target motion model described by a process with independent stationary first increments and is compared with the recurrence processing procedure, which differs from the optimal procedure in that it employs a constant smoothing factor. It is shown that with either type of processing the variance of the smoothed error values reaches a steady value when the smoothing factor is suitably chosen (in the range from 0 to 2). Moreover, by selecting the smoothing factor in accordance with a criterion presented by the authors, the error variance in the steady state can be reduced to the values obtainable with optimal processing. In a discrete meter the errors of single measurements will be filtered if the smoothing factor is in the range from 0 to 1.
