Spectroscopic observations of M giant stars at the South Galactic Pole.
Abstract
Radial velocities and spectral types determined from slit spectra are presented for 30 M giant stars within 300 of the South Galactic Pole. They have been divided by Eggen into young disk, old disk and halo groups on the basis of their space motions parallel to the galactic plane. The velocities found here, together with those in the literature giving 67 stars in all, show an increase in velocity dispersion from the youngest to the oldest group.
