Size Classes of Organic Carbon in Seawater
Abstract
Using carbon analyses, four size classes of organic matter in seawater are investigated. An appreciable portion of the organic matter is smaller than the usually defined particulate class, but is most probably not truly dissolved. This portion can be segregated using very fine membrane filters and using membranes for forced dialysis. It is suggested that this "subparticulate" class should be considered as colloidal organic matter.
