A digital speech interpolation system
Abstract
The basic functions and important design factors of digital speech interpolation are described along with the construction and operation of a particular system developed for PCM-TDMA satellite communications. System evaluation studies demonstrate that digital speech interpolation can be realized with relatively simple and inexpensive circuits as compared to the conventional analog speech interpolation systems and that traffic efficiency with digital speech interpolation can be improved by a factor of two with good speech quality for commercial use. The described equipment is capable of processing the speech signals of 64 input trunks and interpolating them into 32 transmission channels.
