Magnetic field within the return stroke channel of lightning
Abstract
The magnetic field inside the return stroke discharge channel is computed from data on the current flowing in it. The magnetic field increases from zero at the center with increase in radial distance. At about 10 microsec after initiation of the return stroke process, the magnetic field attains a maximum and then decreases continuously. The maximum value of the magnetic flux density is about 3.8 kG at the periphery for a channel of radius 1 cm.
