The internal motions and nuclear mass of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469.
Abstract
Image-tube spectrograms of high resolution have been utilized to determine the velocity distribution within the central regions of NGC 7469. The observed velocity curves, some of which are asymmetric, largely reflect the rotation of the galaxy. A component of much smaller amplitude, attributed to radial motions, is also present. If distributed uniformly, the mass interior to 400 pc is about 10 M0. A central mass condensation in excess of 108 M0 seems to be excluded by the observations. The significance of these mass determinations in relation to models for Seyfert nuclei is discussed. Subject headings: galaxies, individual - galaxies, motions in - Seyfert galaxies
