ON the Emission of NGC 1068
Abstract
The Balmer lines and the forbidden lines of oxygen and nitrogen have been observed in the spectrum of NGC 1068 with an image isocon at 4 A and 1.3 A resolutions. The sets of lines are not symmetrical and their averaged profiles are not Gaussian, possibly due to slight wings on the lines. Ha and Hfl have a higher redshift than the forbidden lines, on the order of 100 km s '. The profile of the Ha- [N ii] line fluctuated over the three months of observation, a change apparently due to a change in line width as well as relative strengths. At the highest resolution, there are indications of cloud structure within the nucleus, as seen by others. Subject headings: galactic nuclei - galaxies, individual - line profiles - Seyfert galaxies
