Gravitational Slowing Down of Solid Spinning Bodies
Abstract
Swmnary. We have studied the dynamics of a solid body subject to the gravitational reaction torque. There are three time scales; the period 2it/w, the precession period 2it/Q and the slowing down time v '; they stand in the relation co Q v, so that it is essential to consider the precessional motion. We have studied the problem for a rigid, axially symmetric body and for an elastic body, in which the equatorial bulge can follow the instantaneous rotation axis to an arbitrary amount. If the body is rigid enough, the precession angle 0 diminishes monotonically; but elastic behaviour may instead increase 0 to 7t/2. When 0 vanishes the radiation stop .
