Multiplicity moments and transverse momentum distributions from a simple geometric model of hadronhadron collisions at high energies
Abstract
From a geometric picture of pp collisions, a simple formula is obtained for the moments of the multiplicity distribution for pions, <n^{α}>^{α} = 2^{α}/(α + 1). This describes the empirically nearconstant moments of the charged prong distribution between 50 and 300 (GeV/c), for α = 2 to 8. The model can yield the following further results for pp collisions: (1) dσ_{el}/dt ~ exp(14t) at small t, with a diffraction minimum near t ~ 0.56 (GeV/c)^{2}; (2) dσ_{el}/dt ~  Σ^{∞}_{n=1} A_{n} exp (7 √s/n^{2} at θ ~ 80° (3) near x = 0, E_{π}(d^{3}σ_{π}/dpp_{π}) ~  Σ^{∞}_{n=1} B_{n} exp (2p_{⊥}/n)^{2}
