The corona stabilizer as used on the EN tandem is analyzed. The predicted limitations due to the time delay and dispersion of the charge carriers in high pressure gas are in good agreement with the measured performance figures. The two loop stabilizer is described with the auxiliary generating voltmeter stabilizer facilitating semi-automatic operation. The resolution of the system measured by using 28Si(p,p) 28Si resonance was ± 1 keV. Multiple breakdowns were prevented during operation and conditioning by the introduction of a protection circuit. The circuit design was based upon the analysis of the breakdown behaviour of the generator and its stabilizer. The recorded behaviour of the generator after total breakdown is in good agreement with the predicted performance.
