The dissolved and solid load carried by some West African rivers: Senegal, Niger, Benue and Shari
Abstract
The author was a member of the Trans-African Hovercraft Expedition of 1969-1970. He took the opportunity to measure the conductivity, pH and bicarbonate content of the water at a number of points along the course of the Senegal, Niger, Benue and Shari rivers. Samples of water were treated to preserve them and sent to England for further analysis. The results are presented here together with the results of other analyses that have been made from time to time in the past. An attempt is made to estimate the seasonal and annual transport of dissolved and solid load by these rivers. Precipitation over the catchments and dust falling on the lakes and rivers are evidently sources of dissolved load difficult to quantify.
