Approximations in radiative scattering
Abstract
The radiative properties of a cloud of particles are governed by electromagnetic scattering. A rigorous theory of scattering in particle clouds must take into account multiple scattering. In furnace flames two basic types of particles may be distinguished from a scattering point of view: powdered coal or liquid oil droplets (very large particles); and soot (very small particles). The scattering by single particles and emission by clouds of particles (large and small) are discussed.
