Position of Cen XR-2 (April 1967)
Abstract
THE strongly variable X-ray source Cen XR-2 was first observed from rocket payloads of the Universities of Adelaide and Tasmania (UAT) in April 1967. This letter reports the results of a reanalysis of UAT flight II on April 20, 1967. It is shown that the particular rocket motion coupled with the unique intensity of Cen XR-2 at the time permits determination of a galactic longitude for the source lII = 310.2+/-1°, which is relatively insensitive to possible errors in the rocket attitude solution. A comparison with more recent X-ray and optical observations yields a positional conflict suggestive of two separate X-ray phenomena.
