X-Ray Observations of GX 17+2 from UHURU
Abstract
We have determined an improved location for GX 17+2 which supports the identification of the radio candidate found by Hjellming and Wade. Our data show significant variations in the intensity and temperature of GX 17+2 over a few thousand seconds. The spectrum is exponential, characteristic of thermal bremsstrahlung, with an absorption cutoff of 2.0 keV. The striking resemblance between GX 17+2 and Sco X-1 in both the X-ray and radio strongly suggests that they belong to the same class of object.
