High-luminosity G supergiants.
Abstract
Six of the eight known luminous G supergiants in the Southern hemisphere were observed at wavelengths from 0.4 to 18 . HR 5171 is shown to be one of the most luminous stars in the Galaxy, comparable with the superluminous supergiants in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The distance to this star and the physical characteristics of its intense circumstellar silicate emission shell are determined. The observations indicate that higher luminosity and later spectral type combine to enhance the long-wave emission feature.
