Near-ultraviolet surface photometry of the Southern Milky Way.
Abstract
Isophote maps are presented of the Milky Way (except the northern region from Per to Cep/Cyg): color-U of the UBV system; field of view- 1 deg1 resolution-i to 2 . The mean intensity of the inner Milky Way is about 100 S10(U) [intensity at poles 15 to 20 S10(U)]. The brightest areas, with intensities up to several hundreds S10(U), are in Sgr/Sco, Car, Vel/Pup, and Cyg. Most bright areas coincide with OB associations and extended Hn regions, and many other such objects are clearly visible, probably due to Balmer continuum emission. The reduction procedure is described in detail.
