Rotational velocities of G and K giants in the Hyades moving group.
Abstract
Rotational velocities are presented for Hyades moving group giants in the spectral range G8-K2. The results confirm Kraft's suggestion, based on the Hyades clitster giants, that these stars rotate less rapidly than would be expected if the stars evolved either (A) maintaining uniform rotation with total angular momentum conserved or (B) conserving the angular momentum of each element. Possible explanations in terms of mass loss or vorticity expulsion are briefly discussed and an observational test is proposed do distinguish between them. Key words: rotational velocities - giant stars - convection - mass loss - vorticity expulsion
