Extra-galactic radio sources-II. The interaction of radio sources with the cosmical blackbody radiation
The effect of the interaction of relativistic electrons in radio sources with the cosmical blackbody radiation on the lifetime of sources, radio source- counts, and the integrated radio and X-ray backgrounds, is discussed for a variety of source models, including the effects of expansion losses and continuous injection of electrons. It is suggested that the X-ray background is due primarily to the weaker radio galaxies: a model in which the radio luminosity of sources is an increasing function of magnetic field is consistent with all the present data. A sharp break in the X-ray background spectrum would, however, lead to difficulties for all models of this type.
