A perturbation solution of the Alihic problem
Abstract
The Milne problem in radiative transfer is solved approximately by a perturbation method. The integral equation formulation is used and the kernel is replaced by a single exponential term containing an arbitrary parameter b. The perturbation term involves the difference between the actual and approximate kernels. By choosing the arbitrary parameter b so that the second term in the perturbation series vanishes for any selected optical depth a solution which is more accurate than the WickChandrasekhar method in the fourth approximation is readily found.
