Broadening and shifting of HF lines due to noble gases
Abstract
Line widths in the 1-0 and 2-0 bands of HF due to a standard atmosphere of argon, krypton, and xenon have been measured. Results in the 1-0 band are similar to those seen in HCl. In the 2-0 band the widths increase at high J values for the heavier perturbers and show a significant decrease with increasing temperature. Results of line shift measurements in the 2-0 band corroborate the measurements of Jaffe, Rosenberg, Hirschfeld, and Gailar and indicate that the shifts are not proportional to the vibrational quantum number of the upper state or to the polarizability of the perturbing gas.
