The Disklike Riemann Ellipsoids
Abstract
Elliptical disks with internal motions are possible equilibria of gravitating gas with negligible pressure, and may be useful models of galazies at an early stage of development. These disks are stable to the largest-scale modes of oscillation when eccentric, and when the ratio of total angular momentum to total circulation, or its inverse, exceeds certain critical values.
