A Possible Cause of Some Unidentified Interstellar Absorption Bands: Crystal-Field Absorption Bands due to Fe^{3+}
Abstract
Optical absorption bands expected in -Fe2O3 due to Fe3+ ions in the crystal lattice are shown to match closely in position, width, and strength with diffuse interstellar bands at 4430, 4760, and 4890 A.
