The Evolution of the Jacobi Ellipsoid by Gravitational Radiation
Abstract
The quasistatic evolution of the Jacobi ellipsoid by gravitational radiation is determined by integrating the equation that gives the rate of dissipation of the angular momentum with the constraint that the ellipsoid remains Jacobian at all times. It is found that the evolution is in the direction of increasing angular velocity toward a nonradiating state at the point of bifurcation with the Maclaurin sequence.
