A Solution of a TimeDependent Equation of Radiative Transfer
Abstract
The timedependent equation of radiative transfer for a planeparallel isotropic scattering medium is solved in the first Gaussian approximation. The time dependence of the transmitted and reflected radiation is characterized by a time constant equal to 1 /KpC. In any physical situation in which the intensity varies significantly during the time required for a photon to travel a unit optical depth, the timedependent characteristics will be important. This is the case for novalike variables, novae, variable nebulae, and presumably quasistellar sources, among others.
