Minor Planets and Related Objects. V. The Density of Trojans near the Preceding Lagrangian Point
Abstract
Two fields near the Lagrangian point L0 in the sun-Jupiter system were searched for Trojan asteroids. These fields, measuring 6?5X6?5 each, yielded 25 and 20 objects that could be identified as Trojans on account of their slow motion. Their magnitudes were determined by comparison with Selected Area 51. Combination of this investigation with the Palomar-Leiden asteroid survey yielded the result that there are about 700 Trojans brighter than opposition magnitude 20.9 associated with this libration point. The slope of the relation appears to be 0.4, the same as that found for the common asteroids.
