Joint probability distributions of the electric microfield in hot plasmas with neglect of interactions between particles
A calculation is presented for the joint probability distribution of the electric microfield in an ionized gas. The gas is assumed to consist of particles which do not interact but cause an electric field. The calculation is done for two models, one in which averages are performed over positions of particles and one over configurations. The first is an outcome of a critical survey of the theories of spectral-line broadening, the second an extension of the Holtsmark distribution. Several cases are considered, joint probabilities in space, time, and in space and time combined.
