The Recent Appearance of a New X-Ray Source in the Southern Sky
Abstract
The recent appearance of a strong X-ray source in the southern sky has been observed with detectors aboard two Vela 5 satellites. The satellite data indicate that the source appeared between 2330 U.T. July 6 and 0430 UT. July 9, 1969, and is located at approximately R.A. 14h56m, deci. -32°15'. During the first few days this source increased in strength and then began to decline. At its peak it was more than twice as strong as Sco XR-1 in the energy range 3-12 keV. The spectrum of this source has grown softer continuously since its appearance
