Isolation, Structure and Synthesis of Ovine and Bovine Gastrins
Abstract
ANDERSON et al.1,2 were the first to report the presence of gastrin-like activity in crude extracts made from the pyloric mucosa of ovine and bovine abomasums; a small amount of similar activity was also detected in fundic mucosa of both species. We now describe the isolation of gastrins from ovine and bovine mucosa, and show that the hormones from the two species are identical and consist of sulphated and unsulphated forms of the linear heptadecapeptide amide (I, R vBar SO3H and R vBar H). They are therefore analogous to porcine3 (II, R vBar SO3H and R vBar H) and human4,5 (III, R vBar SO3H and R vBar H) gastrins, differing from these at only two amino-acid residues.
