Abstract
It is shown that ambipolar diffusion, enhanced by the dynamical instability of the interstellar gas-field system, may permit the escape of a significant portion of the interstellar magnetic field from the disk of the Galaxy during the 1O'°-year life of the Galaxy. The result is a decrease in the scale height or thickness of the gaseous disk
