Observation of High-Energy Cosmic Gamma Rays

High-energy gamma radiation has been detected from a band in the sky coincident with the plane of the Galaxy by a detector flown on the third Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO 3). The intensity of the radiation along the galactic equator has a broad maximum in the direction of the galactic center. In addi- tion, evidence for an isotropic component has been found.
