Stellar-population samples at the galactic poles. I. Proper-motion stars, blue objects, and eclipsing binaries near the south pole.
This is the first in a series of papers that will present accurate photometric data for large samples of objects, with various characteristics, located near the galactic poles. Photometry on the UB V system for the 130 stars of the Bruce Proper Motion Survey within about 3° of the south pole is discussed with reference to the ultraviolet excess and the space motions of the stars. A smaller sample of brighter stars has been observed on the (u,v,b,y) system, and the results show clearly the value of this system in popula- tion studies. Faint blue stars within 100 of the south pole have been observed on the UBVsystem, and their distribution in the (U - B, B - V)-plane is discussed. Also, an attempt to find horizontal-branch stars of the halo population among high-latitude eclipsing binaries has turned up several candidates
