The Optical Image of 3c 287

Several 200-inch and 48-inch Schmidt plates have been used to investigate possible structure asso- ciated with the optical image of 3C 287, as reported by Matthews. No such structure has been detected on plates taken in 1950, 1964, 1967, and 1968. Photographic, instrumental, and seeing effects on the appearance of the images are discussed, and it is suggested that Matthews' results may plausibly be ascribed to these
