Recent Outburst of RS Ophiuchi
Abstract
During the recent outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi several spectrograms were obtained 11 and 13 days after maximum, covering the spectral region from X3500 to X5100 A. The spectrum ap- pears to be substantially the same as that exhibited, at this stage, during the previous outbursts in 1933 and 1958. Radiative ionization and excitation by photons longward of the hydrogen Lyman continuum provide a satisfactory explanation of all the broad emission lines present on these spectrograms. In addition to the broad lines, sharp components are present, presumably produced by an outer shell
