The Eddington Approximation in the Radiative Heat Equation
Abstract
The Eddington approximation in the theory of radiative transfer is generalized to the uon-planeparalld case and is applied to the radiative heat equation. The resulting equation reduces to the exact equation for the problem of radiative relaxation of small temperature fluctuations in the limits of large and small optical thickness of perturbations, and its solutions are reasonably accurate over the whole range of optical thicknesses. A derivation of the Eddington approximation is exhibited which brings out the reason for its wide range of applicability and which suggests a methed of developing higher approximations.
