A General Variational Principle Governing the Oscillations of Gaseous Masses in the Presence of Magnetic Fields
Abstract
A variational principle, applicable to the adiabatic oscillations of a perfectly conducting, self-gravitating, gaseous configuration pervaded by a magnetic field, is derived. Special attention is given to the case in which the magnetic field extends to the exterior of the configuration, and the principle is stated in a form which does not require the trial function to satisfy any boundary conditions.
