Gravitational Instability of Anisotropic Plasma
Abstract
It is known that Jeans's criterion for instability of a selfgravitating gas is valid also for a homogeneous, rotating, lowdensity plasma permeated by a magnetic field The criterion is independent of the magnetic field. In the present paper it is shown that, if the plasma has an anisotropic velocity distribution, the plasma may exhibit hose instability as well as gravitational instability and the criterion for the latter is now dependent upon the magnetic field.
